A new generation in dynamic image analysis

Sympatec launches the QICPIC/S series

With the QICPIC/S series, Sympatec marks the next stage in the evolution of the QICPIC family and dynamic image analysis. With its new high-resolution camera, an increased frame rate, and optimised software and data handling, it redefines precision, reliability and versatility in particle size and shape characterisation for research, industrial applications and product development. With optimised precision lenses, both single-range and multi-range users benefit from expanded capabilities and more efficient measurement range coverage. Proven principles, such as modular, product-specific dispersion and the analysis of individual particles, remain unchanged.

QICPIC/S – Dynamic image analysis on a whole new level

Higher resolution for deeper insights

The new camera technology, offering up to 20 megapixels, combined with optimised lenses, takes image quality to a whole new level. The increased resolution, achieved through smaller pixels, ensures maximum detail, whilst extremely short exposure times, combined with high light intensity, effectively prevent motion blur. This allows QICPIC/S to substantially reduce two of the biggest sources of error in optical particle measurement: motion blur and insufficient depth of field. The result is high-contrast, clearly defined particle contours – the basis for significantly more precise calculation of contour-dependent shape and size parameters, and therefore higher statistical relevance and data quality.

At the same time, the usable measuring range extends further downward: dry measurements below 1 µm become achievable, and even the finest fractions, such as abrasion or trace contamination that that risk being lost in optical noise, are now be reliably quantified.

Faster particle detection, greater statistical confidence

With a frame rate of up to 950 frames per second, the QICPIC/S doubles the measurable sample volume compared to its predecessor. A larger camera sensor also expands the usable field of view: depending on the measurement task, this allows a wider range of particle sizes to be captured in a single image, or the same number of particles to be analysed using a smaller sample size - an essential advantage for rare or especially valuable substances. Users benefit from a higher number of detected particles, improved reproducibility and more robust results overall; individual outliers, such as unusually large agglomerates or extremely fine abrasion particles, are also detected more reliably.

More precise contour detection through optimised data processing

A new segmentation algorithm, combined with the camera's greater depth of field and higher resolution, enables even more precise particle detection with the sharpest possible contour imaging – for both the finest and the coarsest particles. Particles that are closely adjacent or touching are also separated from one another more reliably, which is particularly helpful when analysing challenging samples where the clear identification of individual particles in the captured images is difficult.

Flexible for every measurement task

Depending on the application, QICPIC/S offers several software-adjustable operating modes to flexibly combine field of view, frame rate, and resolution. A maximum resolution enables detailed analysis of even the finest particle contours, while a maximum frame rate supports the capture of significantly larger particle collectives within the same measuring time, providing greater statistical certainty. This allows the measuring system to be optimally adapted to the requirements of any application.

Optimised measurement ranges

Different optical measurement ranges allow the system to be adapted to the specific particle size and measurement task. The entire measuring range from 0.5 µm to 34,000 µm is now covered by up to four precision optics with the QICPIC/S, instead of the six lenses required by the predecessor model – while maintaining full backward compatibility with previous measuring ranges. This simplifies handling, reduces hardware requirements, and automatically opens up expanded capabilities for users. The extended measurement ranges reduce the number of measurement range changes required, particularly in applications with broad particle size distributions. Single-range users, on the other hand, benefit from a broader measurement spectrum.

Flexible data storage

Several options are available for data storage: evaluated particle data can be retrieved instantly and filtered by a wide range of freely definable parameters, while the space-saving storage of binary images keeps storage requirements low. Representative grayscale images can also be retrieved for documentation and visual verification.

Continuity meets innovation

Full backward compatibility ensures that measurement results from QICPIC/S remain fully comparable with those of earlier QICPIC models. This makes the transition to the latest generation seamless, while providing all the benefits in precision, efficiency, and versatility that QICPIC/S has to offer.

Proven strength, reimagined – QUIXEL available for image analysis with QICPIC

The evolution of the QUIXEL family

To match the new sensor generation, we are introducing our proven wet dispersion system QUIXEL/S for all types of suspensions and emulsions in a version specifically developed for QICPIC/S. It is tailored to its requirements, combining QUIXEL's proven technology and functionality with the precision and performance of the new QICPIC/S generation. This means the trusted dispersion system, familiar from laser diffraction, is now available for the latest generation of dynamic image analysis for the first time – covering a measuring range from under 1 µm to 3,500 µm.

Robust design for reliable sample handling

Even demanding, high-density samples are reliably transported in liquid through the flow cuvette thanks to the system’s design. With a large reservoir and the elimination of peristaltic pump technologies prone to wear, the system is built for robust, low-maintenance continuous operation. An integrated ultrasonic unit supports the dispersion process. Fully automated, software-controlled processes can also be operated manually via the control panel. The direct display of the current optical concentration on the control panel gives the operator complete control during sample loading, ensuring fast measurement cycles, reliable sample handling and a smooth analysis process.

The system is available in two versions, featuring 2 mm or 6 mm stainless steel flow cuvettes with FKM gaskets and, optionally, FFKM gaskets for aggressive liquids. A heating option and special top lids with automated additive supply are optional available, covering a broad range of applications.
