True-to-method determination of the size and shape of particles from 1 µm to 500 µm in suspensions and emulsions with dynamic image analysis

Wet dosing unit LIQXI is the recommended solution for feeding finely dispersed suspensions and emulsions from 1 µm to 500 µm for true-to-method analysis of particle size and particle shape with the image analysis system QICPIC and the wet dispersion unit LIXELL. It uses micro-cuvettes with particularly small gap widths of 30 µm to 1 mm, which provide a film of fluid in the measuring zone that is optimised for image analysis of fine particles. Depending on the setup, LIQXI & LIXELL can be operated in a closed-loop set-up or in flow-through mode as a “one shot” measurement. Since all of the parameters that are relevant for the measurement are software-controlled and can be saved as retrievable measuring methods (Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)), this system configuration can be validated.

Different combinations of stainless steel stirrers and glass beakers are available for homogenisation of the liquid sample. With the ViscoJet® stirrer, most samples can be homogenised already at slow speeds in a conventional beaker. A beaker with a flow-optimised bottom has been developed for suspensions with coarse particles or broad distributions. In conjunction with a flow control baffle and the axial stirrer, even these kinds of suspension – which tend towards sedimentation and segregation – are prepared as a representative product stream for the measurement.

LIQXI is equipped with a powerful, speed-regulated peristaltic pump in order to guide the homogenised suspension in a closed measurement circuit. It pumps the sample material through the cuvette of the LIXELL back into the supply vessel from which it was taken. In the “one shot” application, after it has passed through the LIXELL cuvette, the sample material is pumped into a second beaker, which is positioned behind the supply vessel on the drip tray made of stainless steel. For monitoring the temperature of the medium in the beaker LIQXI features an infrared thermometer.


The modular concept of the QICPIC image analysis sensors allows this configuration to be systematically expanded with numerous dispersion units and dosing options, thereby opening it up to many more product-appropriate measuring applications.
