APPLICATION

Anode Coke

Real-time particle size analysis of coke particles for process control

Anodes are used in the steel and aluminium industries to melt the raw materials. Anode coke consists of solid raw materials that are processed, formed and burned into granular dry matter by grinding, sieving and mixing. The widely distributed coke particles are mixed with pitch and sintered in corresponding geometries. The fine material is produced in the horizontal or vertical mills, and fills the spaces between the coarse particles. An optimal size distribution of the fine material ensures a high bulk density of the sintered body, and thus prevents premature “tearing” of the electrodes during operation.

The on-line particle size analysis ensures that the fine material has the optimum particle size distribution for the function and stability of the electrode. The fine material is analysed almost in real time with representative sampling and powerful dry dispersion and this information makes it possible to reliably control the grinding plants.

Measurement results of the on-line laser diffraction sensor MYTOS with an inbuilt L-shaped probe in the process pipe

  • Early detection of excessive coarse material (oversize)
  • Reliable detection of excessive fine material (overgrinding)
  • Quick and simple measurement
  • High measurement frequency
